The spring of 2020 is meant to be a special one for China. The outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (named “2019-nCoV”) was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province in December 2019. Until today (12th February), there has been 45,171 confirmed globally with 44,730 confirmed in China (WHO Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) Situation Report 12th February 2020).

During this special period, what is the real situation inside of China and how are we dealing with the disease? Should we be anxious about the future or there might be new opportunities after this storm? This article will answer these questions.
It is universally acknowledged that the world’s largest human migration happens every year when China celebrates the Lunar New Year, the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar. Around 385 million Chinese people are planned to leave the metropolis where they work to reunion with their families in rural parts of the country. People get together to visit their friends and families, play mahjong, worship their ancestors and hold various celebration activities. Others make domestic or international travel plans to enjoy this long holiday.
But this year, just one day before the New Year’s Eve, authorities announced to shut down the Wuhan city and blocked all the travel network from 10 am, 23rd January. All large gatherings are stopped and citizens all over China are asked to stay at home because of the confirmed human-to-human transmission. Masks are sold out within 2 days both online and offline. Concerned residents start to panic and rush to hospitals only because of a normal cold.

The spring festival was paused. Chaos, fear, anxiety, and despair are spreading faster than the virus itself.
But how can we surrender before fighting back? China has experience in defeating the SARS outbreak in 2003, so will we this time.
In the most severe area Wuhan, Hubei, 1,000-bed hospital were built within a week, thanks to the experience in Beijing in 2003. Till 9 February 2020, over 15,000 medical workers were sent to Hubei from 29 other provinces, forming 107 medical teams to help Hubei.

In other provinces, thanks to the big data, over 5,000,000 people have left Wuhan and spread to the rest of the country, carrying potential virus before the spring festival. In order to prevent further infection, anyone who came from Hubei is asked to report to local communities and stay at home for 14 days. If anyone has been confirmed the infection, the flight number or train number they have taken will be released in order to notify other passengers.
For others who did not have direct contact with the virus, movies become free for them to watch at home instead of going to the theatre and expose themselves to crowded spaces. Airlines and hotels also offer free cancellation policies, encouraging travelers to suspend their trip plans. Thanks to the convenient online shopping delivery systems like JD and Meituan, meat and vegetables can be delivered to your front door without meeting anybody. If anyone feels uncomfortable but does not want to risk to go to the hospital, online doctors are free to consult 24/7. For the masks, the authorities have taken control over the mask’s factories, dispatching them to hospitals first then to other citizens evenly.

There is no more panic and fear among residents anymore because we know someone smart is taking their responsibilities to do what they need to do. We trust them and we follow them. Staying at home is our way to protect ourselves and to protect our country, too.
By today, the number of increased confirmed cases outside of Hubei province has been decreased in a continuous 8th day. The disease seemed to be controlled outside of Hubei and we believe we will win back Hubei very soon.

The WHO committee does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions based on the current information available.
Leaders of foreign political parties have sent messages to the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, speaking highly of and voicing support for China’s efforts to fight the novel coronavirus outbreak.
These supporting voices also indicate that we will win this war.
The spring festival holiday has been extended for a week and for the first time ever, Chinese white-collars start to work from home. Our VELX team also came back to work online from 10th February and our factory planned to resume from 17th February.
(VELX always put safety at the first place)
2020 remains the same when we talk about safety and health because this has and will always be VELX’s first concern. 2020 is also different because we are more confident about ourselves and our country. We firmly believe that we will be able to eliminate the disease as soon as possible with our joint effort and make sure your supply chain will not be affected.
