“What Could I Have Done Differently” to Save My Pet?

CBD might have been reported as a “cure-all” medical marvel recently, is it possible to save my pet’s life as well?

If you are a CBD oil extraction lab decision-maker, would you consider pet CBD treatment as a new business opportunity?

Labrador Won a Losing Battle

A Labrador retriever, Nicholas, had been living a healthy and happy life for 7 years. But as he got older, his fur started to fall out, the skin at the affected area festered, exposing deep wounds.

His owner, Martin, send him to the vet as soon as possible but only came back home with bags of useless antibiotics. After three weeks, the wounded area spread to a third of Nicholas’s body, resulting in severe pain and loss of appetite. Martin and his wife were so heartbroken seeing him fading away day-by-day after trying more pharmaceuticals and ointments.

But they did not want to give up. Martin found a second option at the best animal clinic in the city of Brno, where cost them nearly $2,000 price tag. Sadly, this new treatment only worked well at the beginning, and it did not last long. Nicholas couldn’t take more pills, and Martin is ready to let him go, woefully.

During the final darkest and hopeless time, Martin and his wife Romana were introduced to cannabis by a friend. “Anyway, we have nothing to lose now,” said Romana. Although they knew little about cannabis at that moment, they were willing to give it a try. They applied to Nicholas’s sores with a coconut cream infused with a cannabis extract with 80 percent THC and 5 percent CBD. They also diluted this extract with olive oil and gave him orally. The miracles started to happen after a long sleep. Nicholas finally started to feel hungry and put on some weight. He was “completely cured,” said Martin, in just two months.

The Potential Fluffy Market

Pets have always been good friends with humans, and more and more people are getting very attached to them. When people start to talk about their loving pets, they can be very passionate and just keep talking for hours and hours.

Research showed that CBD-infused pet products had entered the booming cannabis market, along with other products for human beings. The CBD industry for humans could be worth a staggering $16 billion by 2025. As for pets, the owners of dogs and cats spent more money on their fluffy friends every year. Data from the American Pet Products Association shows that the total dollar amount spent on pets in 2018 climbed to $72.5 billion in 2018 and is expected to surpass $75 billion in 2019.

What are the Benefits of CBD for pets?

Many articles have already covered the health benefits for pets. Although empirical research on this area is still not enough to justify CBD’s safety and efficacy for cats and dogs, vets suggest several benefits to the illness listed below:

  • Arthritis
  • Epilepsy
  • Chronic pain

Also, CBD for pets has the effect of anti-anxiety, anti-nausea, and appetite-stimulating for kidney disease, chronic gastrointestinal conditions, and cancer.

Useful Notes

While pet owners are suggested to discuss CBD use with their veterinarians before starting treatment, please note that it is still illegal for vets to prescribe cannabis to pets. Thus, it is the owner’s responsibility to do their research and make sure the pet CBD product is entirely natural.

When applying the dosing, it is suggested to start slowly and see how the pet reacts. Increase the dose gradually while paying proper attention to any side effects or any sudden changes from the pet. The side effects include lethargy, vomiting, sedation, or gastrointestinal upset.

The products for pets vary from edibles like biscuits, soft-chews to tincture, which is a more common choice. The typical administration route is to take orally or mix the tincture with the pet’s food.

Future Outlook

Although the regulations and scientific research are not adequately prepared for the pet CBD market, there are still great potentials behind it. NASC is a nonprofit industry organization, which is working with the FDA on regulations to form the animal supplement industry better.

Others are also utilizing their professional knowledge to help this industry to grow. Veterinarian Dr. Greg Richter and pet herbalist Dr. Rob Silver are working closely on educating pet owners and supporting the regulations on the benefits of pet’s cannabis treatments. Dr. Rob Silver has even published a book named Medical Marijuana & Your Pet: The Definitive Guide, which provides in-depth research on determining whether the cannabis treatment is right for the pets.

CBD extract labs can keep an eye on these organizations and researchers, and develop an independent brand, especially for the pets!

For VELX, it is such a shame that pets can’t puff. Let us imagine a lovely scene that one day, you share your favorite vape pen with your dearest dog, maybe even flavored in bones!
